OCD
- Obsessions are unwanted thoughts, doubts or images that frequently occur and appear in your mind.
- Compulsions are the repeated activities you do in order to relieve the anxiety that is being caused by your obsessions.
Many people will have obsessions or compulsions to a minor degree however for some these obsessions and compulsions have a significant impact on their day to day living. There is an inability to “turn off” these negative thoughts and images and a fear that if you do not carry out the activity with which you associate with relieving anxiety for these thoughts, that you are endangering your safety.
Some symptoms of OCD
OCD can have an impact on many areas of your life. It can lead you to feel lonely or isolated. It can have an impact on your relationships, your ability to work or study. You can become highly anxious or may even feel ashamed of what you are experiencing.
There are some other related mental health disorders that can occur with OCD which can make it more difficult to diagnose and treat.
How can counselling help?
The first step for treatment for or discussing if you are concerned you may have OCD is to visit your GP. If diagnosed with OCD, Talking Therapies have proved a useful intervention in providing help, support and the space to explore not only your obsessions and compulsions but also strategies to help manage these.
If you know someone who has OCD or is concerned they may have OCD you can help them by being non judgemental of any obsessions they may share with you. Reassure them that you are there to support them. It can be a stressful time for you as well, but having patience is key to providing support.
